Bain’s
study on the Chinese luxury travel market forecasts vigorous growth in the
luxury market and says Chinese consumers are increasingly coming home to
purchase luxury experiences.
INTERNATIONAL REPORT — Several factors have contributed to the
transformation of the burgeoning Chinese luxury travel market, including
changing attitudes towards luxury consumption, the proliferation of digital
platforms and social media, and the emergence of experiential luxury, according
to the latest study on China’s luxury hotel market.
The “Luxury explored: Chinese luxury
travelers’ evolving desires” report, which was commissioned by Boston-based
Bain and released by Marriott International in conjunction with Manhattan, New
York-based Jing Daily, offers a comprehensive review of the Chinese luxury
travel segment and highlights a robust growth trajectory fueled by rising
affluence, increased discretionary spending a burgeoning middle class in China.
The study forecasts vigorous growth in the
luxury market, with Chinese consumers increasingly returning to purchasing
luxury within the country.
“Understanding the evolving desires of
Chinese luxury travelers is paramount for us to continue delivering exceptional

luxury, greater China for Marriott. “The findings in this report reaffirm

Key findings from the study include:
- Attitude shifts: The study found that
mature travelers prioritize exclusivity, while the young generation seeks
uniqueness. It said the younger generation is drawn to quiet luxury and niche
brands, and those preferences are shifting towards community-based experiences
and global connections. The study found less emphasis on social interaction
among mature luxury travelers in China.
- Digital influence: The study said the
expansion of digital platforms and social media has shaped consumer perceptions
and driven demand for unique, “Instagram-worthy” experiences. It said Chinese
travelers rely heavily on online reviews, recommendations, and social media
influencers for travel decisions.
- Experiential luxury: The study said
affluent Chinese travelers seek encounters that “foster cultural exchange,
intellectual stimulation, and spiritual rejuvenation.” It said luxury travel is
not just about opulence but creating memorable experiences.
The report said the evolving Chinese luxury
market underscores the dynamism and adaptability of the global luxury travel
industry. It said companies that embrace innovation, foster collaboration, and
prioritize authenticity will shape the future of China’s luxury travel.
