In
a prelude to Hyatt’s completed $2.6 billion acquisition of Playa Hotels &
Resorts later this week, six of Playa’s properties are already listing under a
Hyatt flag.
INTERNATIONAL
REPORT — As the hotel world awaits the finalization of Hyatt’s $2.6 billion
acquisition of Playa Hotels & Resorts later this week (and the asset sales
that are expected to follow) comes news that six of Playa’s hotels have already
rebranded to a Hyatt flag.
According to
a note from analyst Michael Bellisario of R.W. Baird, six of the seven
Playa-owned hotels that did not previously carry a Hyatt flag have now been
rebranded to Hyatt or Apple Leisure Group (which Hyatt acquired in 2021)
brands. Bellisario sent the note after checking hotel websites, which had
changed a new site or had new property information. He also cited other media
reports noting the same.
Hilton lost
four flags in the rebranding, which Bellisario said are notable. “While
unlikely material from a lost earnings perspective, the deletions are a
strategic loss, in our opinion, especially given that Hilton only has a dozen
remaining all-inclusive resorts globally, of which seven are located in the
Americas (excluding the U.S.),” he said.
Wyndham
appeared to have lost one hotel to the rebranding and has another Playa-owned
hotel, the Wyndham Alltra Playa del Carmen in Mexico, which still is listed
under the Wyndham flag and could be sold separately (meaning not part of a
larger portfolio sale expected to take place after Hyatt officially acquires
Playa later this week).
If
everything goes according to plan, Hyatt expects to own all ordinary shares of
Playa on or about June 17.
