New development data on China from Lodging Econometrics shows Chengdu has the most new construction projects.
INTERNATIONAL REPORT —
China’s hotel construction pipeline reached a record high of 3,720
projects and 686,017 rooms, up 3% for projects year-over-year, according to the
latest data released by Lodging Econometrics.
LE attributes the record to the large number of
upscale and upper midscale projects, which both hit project and room count
peaks in Q3.
Forty-five
percent of the projects in China’s top cities were in the upscale and
upper-midscale segments. The largest upscale project in
the top five markets is the 886-key Narada Resort & Spa in Guangzhou and
the biggest upper midscale project is the 468-key Primus Hotel in Chengdu.
Chengdu
was the top market in China in the third quarter, with 153 projects and 30,747
rooms. All but nine of those projects are new construction.
Shanghai
is the No. 2 market with 134 projects and 26,857 rooms. Only 13 of those
projects are projects are renovations or conversions.
Guangzhou
is the third-place market for the quarter with 114 projects and 23,783 rooms.
All but six of the projects are new construction.
Hangzhou
is fourth with 97 projects and 19,913 rooms. Seven of the projects are
renovations or conversions.
Wuhan
is the fifth-place market with 93 projects and 12,904 rooms. Ninety of the
projects are new construction.
